Sounds like a movement

posted by: Kenji category: Empowerment, Leadership

This past weekend the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) hosted their annual conference. In partnership with Saskatchewan in motion brought Farley Flex to Saskatchewan to speak as one of the key notes. He posed some very good questions. Do you ever stop and really ask yourself what makes you make choose to live the way you do? Or are you simply swept up in whirl wind of life set out before you? In a few more eloquent words he said that your life is not your own and you leave no legacy if you don’t know why you make the choices you do. Sometimes we can convince ourselves we are covering all the bases. We say, “heck ya, I’ve got this cased”. He’s very good at making you want to run out of the building and make something happen! I’ve found the same thing from other people in the past, but when you try to go and do something you find yourself going – - great, but how? Farley was awesome cuz he tells you! He makes things uncomplicated that otherwise seem so twisted. With all this beauty and simplicity he is also realistic.

Burnin’ Up!

posted by: Kenji category: Body Fuel/Calories, Healthy Living

No matter where we live in the world we all share something in common. We all need food to survive. Our bodies require fuel, and when we are active on a regular basis the amount of fuel we need increases. I need anywhere between 2000-2100 calories a day to stay where I’m at. Hard core athletes can burn 5000 calories in a day. Whoa! Think Michael Phelps’ crazy Olympic diet. I’m a firm believer that most things in the world are connected and you may find it interesting to know why I chose to write about what fuels our bodies. Today is World Food Day, which made me think I am so fortunate to have the resources available to eat healthy, and get what my body needs to survive and thrive.

posted by: Kenji category: Active Transportation, Active in Nature, Environment

Today is a really exciting day. It is blog Action day! This day was created to ignite a discussion. Bloggers from around the world take one day to focus on a single issue. This effectively changes the global conversation on the web and refocuses attention on an important issue. I think now more than ever the focus is where is should be, on climate change. The simple truth is, if you live on this planet you impact it. Ultimately through all my searching I realized that no issue stands alone. Physical Inactivity has its way of contributing to the global climate crisis.

No Child Left Inside Day!

Whenever I can I spend time outside I do. There’s always mysterious potential and a sense of freedom in nature. That’s why I was so amped to discover that today October 13, is the second annual No Child Left Inside Day! There are a variety of organizations and motivations behind this day of celebration. One reason is a book written by Richard Louv called “Last Child in the Woods:Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder”. His booked stoked the fire behind a fascinating concept-the disconnect between the children and youth of today and nature.

An F for Physical Activity?

posted by: Kenji category: General

It’s here! “What?” you ask.
The Saskatchewan Supplement to the 2009 Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth. According to the research “only 15% of 5-19 year olds in Saskatchewan are meeting the physical activity guidelines.” We’re doing slightly better than the national national average of 13% but we still get a big old F. I am not cool with that. The supplement shows that improvements on the national average have been made, which means no one can say our ultimate goals are impossible. So what can we do to raise Saskatchewan’s grade?
